Stylus (Needles)

The stylus / styli / needle is the diamond 'tip' part of a phono cartridge - the bit that sits in the groove of the record. The stylus is the part of the cartridge that has the most effect on the sound of your turntable, so different stylus offer different qualities of sound reproduction. We've detail a bit more information at the bottom of the page!

A spherical stylus, such as the Ortofon DJ S or Ortofon Pro S, offers smoother forwards and backwards motion - perfect for general DJing use. It won't break when cueing a record, or when scratching. In terms of frequency response, scratch specific stylus such as the Ortofon Scratch will pick up and highlight the sounds and tones that turntablists like to play with (such as snares, claps, vocals etc).

An Eliptical stylus, on the other hand, is a bit more delicate but if offers a richer sound reproduction. Due to the eliptical shape, the stylus will sit deeper in the groove picking up detail which spherical stylus just miss. You'd never really use an Eliptical stylus for scratching, as it may be just a bit too delicate for for playback, recording and lighter cueing, you'll certainly appreciate the better sound.
